For those not in the know, “Hardcore Pawn” is a 30-minute show on TruTV that follows the exploits of American Jewelry and Loan — a pawn shop on Greenfield Road in Detroit — that is owned and operated by Les Gold and his two kids, Seth and Ashley. It premiered on Aug. 16, 2010 to one of the network’s biggest audiences ever, and the seventh season debuted in March of this year. TruTV pegs American Jewelry and Loan as “Detroit’s biggest and baddest pawn shop,” and it very well could be. It’s definitely the most famous — or infamous, depending on whom you ask.

While in Detroit I wanted to check this place out. When we walked in, they were filming, I snapped a picture and immediately security came over and made me delete the photo. As long as you don't take photos while they are filming, they don't care. Les, Ashley and Seth were all there. They were out talking to the customers and taking pictures. They were very friendly and treated us well. The store is much smaller than it looks on tv and maybe it was just the time, but the store was also pretty empty. They had some neat things for sale. We ended up buying a couple shot glasses (@$10/piece!) and heading on our way. If you are in the Detroit area, it is work it to just swing by and check it out.

Every Tuesday night I find myself watching two hours straight of this show, and I’m not really sure why. At first I wanted to watch it because it was based in Detroit, and I prided myself on being able to recognize a lot of the buildings and street corners that comprise the cutaway shots. Then I realized that, with the exception of the Renaissance Center, I only recognized the backdrops because they’re the same generic ones the media always depicts of Detroit — abandoned buildings and overgrown parking lots.

Les’s only son, Seth, is an alumnus of the University of Michigan and has been a co-owner of American Jewelry since graduating from school. Seth handles the store’s marketing division and claims that if it was not for him, the shop’s only marketing campaign would be “an ad in the Yellow Pages”. Les’s daughter, Ashley, has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Michigan State University and earned her graduate diamond certification from the Gemological Institute of America. Ashley is a co-owner of American Jewelry and has been working there for more than fifteen years, although she took three years off at one point for maternity leave. The sibling rivalry between her and Seth is a common element of many episodes.
